New lacrosse, men’s volleyball teams help recruit new students

In spring of 2021, the Edgewood College Athletic Department will be introducing men’s volleyball and both men’s and women’s lacrosse to the lineup of athletics offered at the college.

Amidst the chatter of declining enrollment at Edgewood, Athletic Director Al Brisack has high hopes for the new teams encouraging incoming freshmen to choose Edgewood as their place of study and to practice athletics.

“It’ll help,” said Brisack. “The reality is we’re in a position from Athletics where we can help with that.”

Brisack said that schools across the country tend to rely on athletics as a mechanism of stabilizing enrollment. The Athletic Department is working hard to get facilities in place for teams to start training in fall of 2020.

“They’re going to recruit mostly freshman,” Brisack said. “We’ve already had students at other schools that have inquired, have filled out the correct paperwork and have said, ‘Hey, I’d be interested in coming.’”

Brisack looks to both the faculty and Edgewood College as a whole to entice students to favor Edgewood over the many athletic opportunities in Wisconsin. “We have terrific people that are going to be coaching them. This is a gorgeous campus. We have some amazing faculty that are very dedicated to what they do,” he said.

Brisack also ensured that future students would be interested in the opportunity to claim they were the first to play lacrosse and men’s volleyball at Edgewood College.

He also looks forward to students coming out to watch their peers play, as with other Edgewood teams.
