13 Tips and Rules for a Safe and Spooky Halloween

By Ari Ebert-Standard

With Halloween fast approaching, it’s important to stay conscious of your decisions, whether you’re attending Freakfest, a party or staying cozy on campus. Here are some tips on how to remain safe and ensure that you’re maximizing the fun that you’re having on this spooky night!

TIPS:

Always bring a buddy

Staying in your group and ensuring that there is at least one person that you can stick to all night is important, especially when going out at night. Make sure that the person you choose as a buddy is one you trust and stay close to them all night.

Watch your drink

It doesn’t matter if you’re at a bar, at a party or chilling with friends, you should be watching your drink. One in 13 college students report being drugged or suspected being drugged, according to the journal “Psychology of Violence.”

Charge your phone

Having a fully charged phone ensures that you will always have a mode of communication with you during Halloween. This way, if you get lost and/or can’t find your friends, you have a way to contact them. Just make sure they charge their phones, too!

Use Uber and Lyft

Don’t get into a car with a drunk person to save money on Uber, Lyft or cab fees. It isn’t worth your life, or the expensive tickets that you will likely receive with the heightened police presence. Typically, Uber and Lyft also have Halloween deals going on to make sure people stay safe.

Give a trusted, (sober) person your location

It doesn’t have to be your parent, but make sure that you are sharing your location with at least one trusted friend or family member. This way, if anything happens to you, someone who is in a clear headspace will know where you are and be able to get help if needed.

Test costume makeup before use

Not all of these tips have to do with staying safe while going out! Even if you’re staying home but want to have a fun costume, always test out costume makeup before you use it. This way, you can know if you are allergic to it or if it stains your skin.

Bring a small bag of costume supplies

If your costume involves a lot of makeup or small parts, bring a little bag full of supplies with you wherever you go on Halloween. Even if it’s just a small sewing kit, you would be surprised how quickly a costume can fall apart if you’re not prepared.

Stay warm!

Yes, your costume is cute, but is it warm enough? In late October, Wisconsin weather is no joke. Make sure at the very least, you have some sort of jacket to bring with you when you are out and about during Halloween or Freakfest. Your body will thank you.

HALLOWEEN RULES:

No Guests in Residence Halls

Guests are not permitted in the Residence Halls Friday, Oct. 24 at 4:30 p.m. through Sunday, Oct. 27 at 10 a.m.

Edgewood ID Required for Eagle Express Shuttle

Make sure you have your Edgewood ID on you at all times if you plan on using the Eagle Express Shuttle. It is required for you to ride. During the previously mentioned dates, no guests will be allowed on the shuttle.

FreakFest Limitations

Alcohol is not allowed on the street during FreakFest (or any time).

Backpacks and other items are prohibited during FreakFest.

FreakFest prohibits backpacks, alcohol, glass and weapons from the grounds of the event. The FreakFest website implies that some costume items may count as a dangerous item.

Edgewood is a dry campus

Nothing will put a damper on Halloween celebrations like having your room inspected by Security. If you want to drink, make sure you take it off campus and that you are of age.
