14-Year-Old Charged After Bomb and Gun Threat Triggers Lockdown at Sweet Home High School

BUFFALO, N.Y. (WIVB) — A 14-year-old student faces multiple charges after Sweet Home High School went into lockdown last Monday following threats, Amherst police announced.

The teen is charged with making a terrorist threat and making a threat of mass harm. Additionally, he faces two counts each of second-degree arson and second-degree criminal mischief for allegedly starting several fires during the week of May 11, some of which caused property damage.

According to Sweet Home Central School District Superintendent Michael Ginestre, police found “no actual threats” after conducting a thorough search of the school. The lockdown was triggered by a report claiming a person with a gun was inside a bathroom, along with alleged threats that three bombs had been planted in the building.

The lockdown lasted several hours, but no injuries were reported among students or staff.

“Sweet Home will continue to cooperate with APD throughout the investigation,” Ginestre said in a message to families and staff on Monday. “The student faced an immediate suspension and is currently going through the school discipline process to the fullest extent possible.”

Authorities transported the student to Erie County Family Court.

Due to the student’s age, police did not release additional information, and the school declined to comment further on the investigation.
