5 Northwest Wisconsin Counties Face Extreme Fire Danger

Five counties in northern Wisconsin are under a red flag warning on Tuesday, signaling a high risk of wildfires. The alert follows a wildfire in Juneau County that prompted the temporary evacuation of 40 homes.

The Department of Natural Resources (DNR) and the National Weather Service issued the red flag warning after a combination of weather conditions—hot temperatures, low humidity, gusty winds, and dry vegetation—created a perfect storm for wildfires.

Bayfield, Burnett, Douglas, Sawyer, and Washburn counties are affected by the warning, which remains in effect until 9 p.m. Tuesday.

Fire Risk Statewide

The entire state is currently under an elevated fire risk, with all but 12 counties in the far southeast experiencing high or very high fire danger.

On Monday, a wildfire in Juneau County burned through 130 acres, forcing evacuations in the Kingston and Mather communities before crews contained the fire by evening. Meanwhile, two fires in Burnett County destroyed 60 acres and a structure.

Over 130 Wildfires Reported in One Week

The DNR reports that more than 130 wildfires have occurred across Wisconsin in the past week.

Public Urged to Avoid Fire-Starting Activities

Officials are asking residents to use extra caution with anything that could start a fire—such as outdoor grills, chainsaws, or off-road vehicles with hot exhaust systems that might spark. The DNR also urges the public to check for local burning restrictions before engaging in any outdoor burning activities.
