ALHAMBRA, Calif — The Alhambra Police Department will deploy extra officers on May 12, 2025, from 6:30 a.m. to 1:00 p.m., to focus on violations by both drivers and motorcycle riders.
The leading causes of motorcycle crashes include unsafe speed, improper turning, failure to yield the right of way, driving under the influence, and unsafe lane changes. Among these, speeding remains the most common, contributing to nearly one-third of all crashes in California.
To protect yourself and others, consider these safety tips while driving or riding:
Drivers
- Always double-check mirrors and blind spots for motorcycles.
- Use your turn signals when changing lanes.
- Maintain a safe following distance behind motorcycles.
- Give riders enough space when turning at intersections.
Motorcyclists
- Wear a DOT-approved helmet and protective gear at all times.
- Use reflective tape to boost visibility.
- Keep your headlights on during the day.
- Signal early and stay alert for turning vehicles.
- While lane splitting is legal, avoid doing it at high speeds or in fast-moving traffic.
The Alhambra Police Department will conduct a second motorcycle safety operation on May 16, 2025, during the same hours of 6:30 a.m. to 1:00 p.m., again targeting unsafe behavior from both riders and drivers.
This enforcement effort is funded by a grant from the California Office of Traffic Safety through the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.
