Arizona Fire Weather Watch: Strong Winds and Dry Air Increase Wildfire Threat Through Sunday Night

FLAGSTAFF, Arizona – Northern Arizona faces heightened wildfire danger this weekend as strong winds and extremely low humidity prompt a Fire Weather Watch from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. MST on both Saturday and Sunday.

The National Weather Service in Flagstaff reports that dry conditions combined with gusty southwest winds—reaching up to 45 mph—will significantly raise fire risk, especially across Coconino, Navajo, and Apache counties. For communities within the Navajo Nation, the alert remains in effect from noon to 8 p.m.

Saturday’s watch includes Alpine, Holbrook, Winslow, Show Low, and Tuba City. On Sunday, Eagar, Springerville, and Saint Johns will fall under the alert. Winds will blow between 15 and 25 mph, with some areas experiencing gusts close to 45 mph. Humidity may drop as low as 8%, creating conditions for fires to spread rapidly if ignited.

Officials urge residents to follow all fire restrictions, refrain from using spark-generating equipment, and avoid parking vehicles on dry grass. Smoking and open flames should be strictly avoided throughout the weekend.

If winds strengthen or humidity drops further, fire conditions could deteriorate. Forecasters warn that additional fire weather warnings may be issued if fuels continue to dry out into next week.
