Arizona Mom Shoots 38-Year-Old Son Over Loud Video Game Volume, Police Say

A 72-year-old Arizona woman has been arrested after allegedly shooting her son during an argument over the volume of his video games, authorities said.

On May 17, Mesa police responded to a home where they found Hazel Benson’s 38-year-old son with a gunshot wound to the stomach. He was taken to a hospital and is expected to recover, KTAR News reported.

Benson told officers she became frustrated with the loud volume of her son’s video games, according to KSAZ.

Her son reportedly left the house to cool off but returned later to find himself locked out. When he tried to get back in, Benson refused to let him inside, police told KPNX.

The son then “lunged at her with raised fists,” prompting Benson to shoot him, officers told KSAZ.

She wasn’t certain whether she had hit him but threw the gun into a nearby canal. When her son began “pounding” on the back door, she called 911, police said.

Benson was taken into custody and charged with aggravated assault, disorderly conduct with a deadly weapon, and firing a gun within city limits, KTAR News reported.

Mesa is located about 20 miles southeast of Phoenix.
