$400 Inflation Rebate Checks Coming to 8.2 Million New Yorkers: Who Qualifies?

New York Governor Kathy Hochul has announced that inflation rebate checks of up to $400 will be distributed this fall to 8.2 million households across the state. The initiative, part of the Fiscal Year 2026 State Budget, reflects her ongoing commitment to return money to New Yorkers as they face rising living costs.

The budget also includes historic tax relief measures, such as lowering middle-class taxes to their lowest levels in 70 years, expanding the Child Tax Credit to $1,000 per child, and guaranteeing universal free school meals to further ease household financial pressure.

Who Will Receive the Inflation Rebate Check?

Only New York State residents are eligible, but certain conditions must be met. To qualify, you must:

  • File Form IT-201 (Resident Income Tax Return)
  • Report income within eligible thresholds
  • Not be claimed as a dependent on another taxpayer’s return

Governor Hochul explained:

“They will receive an inflation refund because it is simple: this is their money and we are giving it back to them. I will help families cope with the rising cost of living.”

How Much Will You Receive?

Checks will be mailed between August and October, and there will be no prior notification or delivery schedule. Some households may receive their checks earlier than others.

The rebate amount depends on your income and filing status:

  • Married couples (joint filers) earning up to $150,000/year$400 check
  • Married couples earning $150,000 to $300,000/year$300 check
  • Single filers earning up to $75,000/year$200 check
  • Single filers earning $75,001 to $150,000/year$150 check

Be sure to monitor your mailbox during the distribution period, as the checks will arrive without advance notice.
