New Orleans Jail Employee Arrested for Assisting Escape of 10 Inmates

NEW ORLEANS — A maintenance worker at a New Orleans jail has been arrested and charged with helping 10 inmates execute a calculated overnight escape, deepening suspicions that the breakout had inside assistance.

The Louisiana Attorney General’s office confirmed that Sterling Williams, 33, was taken into custody on Monday for his alleged role in the escape that occurred late Thursday or early Friday last week. Investigators say Williams shut off the water supply to a cell, enabling the inmates to dislodge a heavy metal toilet and sink unit from the wall. Behind it, they cut through a portion of the jail structure, creating a hole just large enough to crawl through.

“Instead of reporting the inmate, Williams turned the water off as directed,” the Attorney General’s office said in a statement. “This enabled the inmates to carry out their scheme to successfully escape.”

After breaching the cell wall, the inmates fled through a loading dock, scaled a wall, and crossed the nearby Interstate 10, evading detection for approximately seven hours before a routine head count at 8:30 a.m. on Friday revealed they were missing.

Authorities found a mocking message left behind by the escapees, scrawled on the wall: “to easy LOL.”

Lack of Supervision

At the time of the escape, a civilian employee assigned to monitor surveillance footage in the affected section of the jail had reportedly left his post to get food. Orleans Parish Sheriff Susan Hutson acknowledged last week that the situation exposed serious security lapses within the facility.

“It’s almost impossible — not completely, but almost impossible — for anybody to get out of this facility without help,” Sheriff Hutson stated at a Friday press briefing.

The maintenance worker now faces one count of malfeasance in office and 10 counts of principle to simple escape, according to court records. As of Tuesday, it remains unclear whether Williams has secured legal representation.

He is scheduled to appear in court on Tuesday afternoon.

Ongoing Manhunt and Investigation

Authorities launched a full-scale manhunt after realizing the inmates were missing. As of now, four escapees have been captured, while six remain at large. Law enforcement agencies are urging the public to report any sightings or relevant information.

Louisiana Attorney General Liz Murrill stated that the investigation is ongoing and emphasized that further charges may be filed as more details come to light.

“We will uncover all the facts eventually,” Murrill said. “Anyone who aided and abetted will be prosecuted to the full extent the law allows.”

She also called on individuals with information — even those who may have played a role — to come forward now in order to secure “the best possible outcome in their particular case.”

Security Breach Raises Broader Concerns

This incident adds to a growing list of jail and prison security concerns in Louisiana. Experts note that escapes of this scale almost always involve institutional breakdowns, ranging from physical infrastructure to personnel training and oversight.

The Orleans Justice Center, where the escape took place, has faced scrutiny in the past over inmate safety, staffing shortages, and inconsistent monitoring. A 2013 federal consent decree mandated sweeping reforms at the jail, but many advocates say progress has been uneven.

“This escape underscores the urgent need to reevaluate how jails are staffed, maintained, and supervised,” said a criminal justice reform expert at the Vera Institute of Justice. “When routine maintenance workers can manipulate core systems like water supply and security goes unchecked for hours, that’s a systems failure.”

What Comes Next

Sheriff Hutson has pledged a full review of security protocols and staffing in the wake of the escape. “We are working with state and federal partners to ensure something like this cannot happen again,” she said.

Meanwhile, public confidence in the facility’s leadership has been rattled, and the incident may reignite debates around criminal justice reform and jail oversight in Louisiana.

A reward is expected to be announced for information leading to the recapture of the remaining escapees. The Attorney General’s office has requested that any tips be submitted to their office or to the local Crimestoppers hotline.
