EAST HARLEM — A convicted rapist is now facing an attempted murder charge after a woman was found brutally beaten and unconscious on a Randall’s Island bike path, according to police.
Miguel Jiraud, 30, was arrested Friday in connection with the attack. He previously served 12 years in prison for raping a 28-year-old woman in the Bronx in 2011 and was released on parole in August 2024, according to corrections records and sources.
Investigators used Jiraud’s ankle monitor to trace his movements the night of the incident, helping link him to the scene, sources said.
As officers escorted him out of the 25th Precinct in Manhattan, Jiraud denied the charges, saying, “I did not (beat her). I found her.”
The victim, Diana Agudelo, 44, was riding her e-bike near East 125th Street around 11:30 p.m. on May 16 when she was struck repeatedly in the head and face, NYPD officials said. Her e-bike was later recovered from the East River, and her sneaker was discovered in a trash can nearby.
She was found unresponsive the next day by a passerby and rushed to the hospital in critical condition.
Agudelo suffered a skull fracture and multiple facial fractures and remained in a coma as of Friday.
Her coworkers launched a GoFundMe campaign to assist with medical and living expenses. The page has raised more than $38,000 so far.
“We are deeply saddened to share that our beloved colleague, Diana Agudelo, was seriously injured as she was traveling home from the Museum. She remains hospitalized and is currently unable to work,” the fundraiser states.
