AURORA, Colo. — A 16-year-old male suspect escaped from police custody late Sunday morning, triggering a shelter-in-place order for a nearby Aurora neighborhood.
The juvenile broke free while being escorted from the Aurora Detention Center at 14999 E. Alameda Parkway to a patrol car shortly before noon, according to police.
After fleeing, he ran into the residential area north of the detention center, prompting authorities to issue a shelter-in-place alert for the neighborhood.
Aurora Police Department Agent Matthew Longshore said multiple officers are in the area, and a perimeter has been established as more resources are deployed to assist in the search.
Police initially contacted the teen suspect around 10 a.m. in connection with a stolen vehicle. He reportedly has several outstanding warrants for motor vehicle theft and eluding police.
The suspect is described as a Hispanic male with long hair shaved on the sides, neck tattoos, and pierced ears.
Residents in the area are advised to stay indoors and contact 911 immediately if they spot him.
