The Goleta Police Department will carry out two traffic safety operations—one on Friday, May 16, from 1 p.m. to 6 p.m., and another on Monday, May 19, from 12 p.m. to 5 p.m. These operations will focus on the most dangerous driving behaviors that threaten the safety of pedestrians and bicyclists.
Targeted violations include speeding, making illegal turns, failing to yield or provide the right of way, and not stopping for signs and signals.
To help prevent crashes and injuries, the Goleta Police Department encourages both drivers and pedestrians to follow key safety tips:
Pedestrians:
- Be predictable by using crosswalks when available.
- Stay alert and watch for oncoming vehicles.
- Avoid walking or running into the path of a car. A driver going 30 mph needs at least 90 feet to stop.
- Increase your visibility with light-colored or reflective clothing and carry a flashlight, especially at dawn, dusk, or night.
- Take extra caution when crossing streets in the dark or on wide, high-speed roads.
Drivers:
- Obey the speed limit and slow down near intersections.
- Be ready to stop for pedestrians in marked or unmarked crosswalks.
- Don’t block crosswalks while waiting to turn right.
- Never drive under the influence.
- Avoid texting or using your phone while driving.
Bicyclists:
- Follow traffic rules, signal when turning, and use lights at night. Wear a helmet.
- Ride in the direction of traffic, just like any other slow-moving vehicle.
- Stay off sidewalks and avoid riding too close to parked cars.
- Use bike lanes when available, except when making left turns, passing, or approaching right-turn areas.
- Yield to pedestrians in marked and unmarked crosswalks.
- Never run red lights—even if the road seems clear. Press the pedestrian button if needed.
