Billy Joel Cancels All Shows After Brain Disorder Diagnosis

Billy Joel has called off all upcoming concerts and tour dates following a diagnosis of a brain condition.

The 76-year-old music legend had planned to perform across the U.S., along with two shows in the U.K. this year.

A statement shared on his official Instagram account announced:
“Billy Joel has announced that he will be cancelling all scheduled concerts following a recent diagnosis of Normal Pressure Hydrocephalus (NPH).”

NPH is a neurological condition caused by an accumulation of cerebrospinal fluid in the brain’s ventricles. This buildup increases pressure, compresses brain tissue, and may cause symptoms related to movement, balance, and cognition.

The statement went on to say:
“This condition has been exacerbated by recent concert performances, leading to problems with hearing, vision and balance.

“Under his doctor’s instructions, Billy is undergoing specific physical therapy and has been advised to refrain from performing during this recovery period. Billy is thankful for the excellent care he is receiving and is fully committed to prioritizing his health.”

He also expressed appreciation to fans for their support and added that he hopes to return to the stage when his health allows.

The statement closed with a message from Joel himself:
“I’m sincerely sorry to disappoint our audience, and thank you for understanding.”

The cancelled tour had been set to begin on April 26 in Milwaukee and wrap up on July 3 in Charlotte. It also included two highly anticipated U.K. performances in Edinburgh and Liverpool next June.

Fans who purchased tickets will receive automatic refunds through their original payment method.

Earlier in the year, Joel postponed four months of performances due to an unspecified medical condition. At the time, he had been recovering from a surgery related to that issue.

Joel resumed touring the U.S. after concluding his historic 10-year residency at Madison Square Garden in July 2024.

In February, he released Turn the Lights Back On, his first original song in decades. The track, produced by Freddy Wexler, was co-written by Joel, Wexler, Arthur Bacon, and Wayne Hector.

Last August, Joel played his only European date of the year in Cardiff, Wales, delighting fans by taking the train to the show and snapping photos with the ticket inspector. That day, Great Western Railway gave a nod to his iconic songs Uptown Girl and Piano Man in a post celebrating the moment.
