For On The Edge
Oct. 26, 2022
The Black Student Union (BSU), a 4-year-old organization at Edgewood College, will keep working to guarantee a Black presence on campus this year, according to the organization’s leaders. Students get together once a week to talk about what they can do more of, what ideas they have, any problems, and how to arrange additional activities.
“It’s important for the black community at Edgewood to be recognized and counted in ” said sophomore, outreach chairman and member, Javier Thomas. In order to reach as many people as possible and let them know what is going on, on campus, the Black Student Union will endeavor to achieve that goal this year by posting fliers and printing out small pieces of paper/flyers to place in every dorm room on campus.
The Edgewood college website said the student-led organization “works to foster a supportive environment for all Black and students of African origin by offering a stimulating intellectual, cultural, and social environment to both BSU members and other members of the campus community”. The website also states that the organization promotes academic excellence among all members and directs them to resources inside and outside the college that will aid in achieving their educational objectives.
Member, Sincere Mustafah said, “in our organization, we strive to encourage equality within our community and campus. Becoming more notable and building a stronger African nation here is something we strive to do each and every day”.
“Impact” is the most powerful word to use, to sum up, this narrative and this organization for Edgewood College. Black Student Union, is a group dedicated to fostering a sense of belonging and togetherness among its members. They appear to be attempting to have an effect on others.
Black Student Union has never been as important as it is now; member, and outreach chairman Javier Thomas can attest to that, and says, “ A lot of us came into adulthood without a lot of knowledge of next steps and connections for us, and our want for unity and equality. This is more important now than it was even 5 years ago because so many of us started being isolated, so we came straight into a different environment (college) with less knowledge and social connections. This is why it’s more important now than back then because we’re building the students back up, helping them come into adulthood and allowing them to thrive in a predominantly white institution”.
For more information contact the outreach chairman, Javier Thomas, via email at jcthomas@edgewood.edu, or check out the website on Edgewood College’s homepage. BSU meets every Friday from 3 pm-4 pm in Predolin 115 B, with all leaders including Javier Thomas and the academic advisor Laterrica Moore. BSU has many future events in the works for the future with OSII like a haunted forest around Halloween time, more study jams, and bake sales coming up as well.
