Broward Sheriff Identifies Suspects in 1975 Cold Case Double Murder of Two Teen Girls

BROWARD COUNTY, Fla. – Nearly 50 years after the brutal slaying of two 14-year-old girls, the Broward Sheriff’s Office announced on Thursday that investigators have identified the men responsible.

Darlene Zetterower and Barbara Schreiber, both just out of eighth grade, were murdered in 1975. At a news conference, Sheriff Gregory Tony revealed that advancements in DNA technology, fresh witness statements, and dedicated investigative work led detectives to solve the long-cold case.

“Using advancements in DNA testing, new information from witnesses and solid police work, BSO Detective Andrew Gianino and a team of investigators from BSO’s Crime Lab say two men, Robert Clark Keebler and Lawrence Stein, murdered the girls on a June day in 1975,” the Sheriff’s Office said in a statement.

Detectives believe Zetterower and Schreiber were last seen getting into a van with Keebler and Stein in Hollywood. The girls vanished soon after. Their bodies were discovered the next day at the edge of the Everglades.

DNA evidence has since linked both men to the crime. Authorities confirmed that Keebler and Stein are now deceased.
