Cars inside the Edgewood College parking ramp were vandalized and broken into overnight Aug. 23, according to an email sent out to some of the students who park in the structure.

The email from Aram Melis, Campus Assistance Center Manager, was sent the next morning. Not all students who park in the ramp received the email, students told On The Edge.

“Last night/early this morning some vehicles in the parking ramp of Sonderegger were broken into and vandalized,” the email read. “Please check your vehicle and report any damage or missing items to Edgewood Security or the Madison Police Department. Please remember to always keep your vehicle locked.”

On The Edge reached out to Campus Security, who did not respond to an information request.

Izzy Vreeke, an Edgewood College student who lives on campus said her car was broken into that night. Her sunglasses and an old pair of prescription glasses were also missing. Since she didn’t find the stolen items of high value, she said she did not file a police report.

Some students say they have mixed feelings about whether this event signals broader security threats. In interviews, some students told On The Edge that this incident has caused anxiety, while others see this as an isolated act.

Reed Schroeder, an Edgewood College student who lives on campus and parks in the ramp, said, “I feel as though the parking ramp is pretty safe on an average day, but that’s just because people don’t care enough to cause problems. If they wanted to, I imagine this sort of thing could happen a lot more.”

Students report that they have not received other information about the incident since the initial email sent by Melis.

Correction: An earlier version of this article stated incorrectly that a prescription bottle was stolen. Prescription glasses were stolen.
