Students displaced from Edgewood College campus housing in response to the spread of COVID-19 will receive refunds, Residence Life said in an email on March 19.
“Resident students who have left campus due to the COVID-19 event will receive prorated refunds of room and board,” the email said.
Money refunded to students will be applied to any outstanding charges owed to the college.
Residence Life said that after these adjustments, the remaining credit balance will be refunded directly to students.
According to Jane Wilhelm, controller of Edgewood’s business office, partial refunds are being considered for parking passes and other expenses.
Returning for leftover belongings
Students that have left campus may return April 17-19 to retrieve any belongings they left behind. Students should expect confirmation of these dates by April 14.
Edgewood senior Lexi Chitwood, who lives in Siena and is currently staying in her campus apartment, said it will be hard for students and their families to plan travel if only given 1-3 days’ notice. “That’s absolutely not enough time,” she said, “especially for those who have to travel far and take their whole lives with them.”
Staying on campus
Chitwood said Edgewood College residents were given about 48 hours to move out.
For students like Chitwood who could not find other living arrangements, there was a survey available to request to stay in campus housing.
She said the survey was made available the evening of March 11, and she did not get approval until the evening of March 12 (students were to be gone by 6 p.m. on March 13).
“I think the timing could have been a lot better,” Chitwood said. “It was super stressful not knowing if I’d have to find a place to stay in 24 hours.”
Residence Life permitted 22 students to stay on campus, they told OTE in an email on March 24. That number has since dropped to 16 students.
