COVID-19 UPDATE: Edgewood athletics, study abroad canceled

By Alyssa Allemand

Edgewood College has canceled all athletics, spring break trips, and active study abroad programs for the Spring 2020 semester.

The Northern Athletic Collegiate Conference, which Edgewood College is a member of, has terminated spring sports for the remainder of the semester.

Edgewood Director of Athletics Al Brisack said this announcement is disappointing for student-athletes. “However, given the inability to have student-athletes on campuses and the proper time to ensure they are prepared to compete, this was the only option left,” he said.

Vice President for Academic Affairs Margaret Noreuil said in an email on March 13 that college coaches and athletic administrators are staying in touch with their teams as these decisions are made.

Along with the cancellation of these events, the following places on campus are closed:

  • Fitness Center
  • eSports Arena
  • The Stream
  • Sonderegger Science Center

Student workers can continue working campus jobs if they choose to, Noreuil said in the email. “This is not required, but as some students rely on these positions, we are keeping that opportunity open,” she wrote.

The goal of these responses to COVID-19 is to limit the amount of contact people have with one another so the spread of germs is minimal — also referred to as “social distancing.”

Edgewood residence halls are closed until noon on April 5, and face-to-face classes will not resume until at least April 6.
