Edgewood College first 4-year institution to partner with Boys and Girls Club AVID/TOPS program

Edgewood College hosted representatives from the Boys and Girls Club of Dane County (BGCDC) to finalize their established partnership on Nov 6. The college is the first four-year institution to make the partnership.

Edgewood’s involvement with the BGCDC includes the dedication of $15,000 to ensure “enriched learning and high impact practices” for scholars enrolled in the TOPS program, according to Glenna Scholle-Malone, assistant vice president of college persistence and special projects for BGCDC.

These practices consist of educational opportunities such as study abroad, undergraduate research, and internships. “We are committed to achieving high outcomes together,” said Scholle-Malone, “and doing so with student-centered dedication moving forward.”

This notion was echoed by Edgewood College interim President Sister Mary Ellen Gevelinger, O.P., praising the BGCDC for the “very significant work” they do as well as the ways in which this work benefits families in the community.

“Your mission and ours are deeply aligned,” said Gevelinger. “At Edgewood College, we educate young women and men for personal and professional lives with ethical leadership, service, and the lifelong search for truth … We’re so proud to deepen our partnership with the Boys and Girls Club.”

Edgewood TOPS scholar Nanceny Fanny attributed some of her own success in post-secondary education. “Knowing that we — under-represented students — have a team that is comprised of people who genuinely want us students to succeed makes me confident that we can continue to come out on top in college,” she said.

According to the college’s official press release, 45 of Edgewood’s current students began as AVID/TOPS scholars.
