Edgewood College women’s basketball team is in need of some school spirit.
Saturday night (Feb. 3) Edgewood’s women’s basketball team faced off against Wisconsin Lutheran College, Milwaukee, and lost 66-39.
With 141 people in attendance, Lutheran College’s side of the bleachers appeared to have more than three dozen people. On Edgewood’s side, there were only a handful of family members and friends of a couple of Edgewood players.
The game started with high energy from Edgewood, but it was no match for the Lutheran players, with Lutheran scoring 22 and Edgewood scoring 2 in the first half. Edgewood’s Diamond Pikulyk, player number 50, scored 18 points, the most for the team. In the second half, Edgewood tied in the number of baskets made, but the effort was not enough to get ahead of the crushing lead from the first half.
Al Brisack, Edgewood’s athletic director, said varsity sports at Edgewood do not attract a lot of students.
“This is historical as there are a lot of things for students to do in Madison which compete with our events,” he said. “When we have had the most success, an organization has taken on the challenge of planning events during our games (such as) give-aways.
“These groups haven’t stayed in place as the people in charge of them move on. Our department staff has tried to take the lead on such groups, but their time is so consumed with doing their daily jobs at a high level, it has been tough.”
