By Alyssa Allemand

Current Edgewood sophomore Kaya Mondry has been selected as one of 119 Ernest F. Hollings undergraduate scholars. This scholarship is awarded by the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA), which is a sub-organization of NASA.

The NOAA website says that “scholars receive a two-year academic scholarship for their junior and senior years, paid summer internship opportunities, and funding to participate in two national scientific conferences.” The scholarship grants students $9,500 each year.

Mondry will attend a virtual orientation May 26-28 where she will hear from speakers and former interns from NOAA. Her internship will take place during Summer 2021.

Students apply for the scholarship during their second year of undergraduate study. Applicants must be full-time students with majors in a “NOAA mission field,” the website says, which includes “oceanic, environmental, biological, and atmospheric sciences, mathematics, engineering, remote sensing technology, physical sciences, social sciences, and teacher education.”

Mondry is a Pre-Engineering Physics major with a minor in Chemistry.

“Thank you . . . to the many . . . professors at Edgewood who have provided me with the knowledge and skills that allowed me to qualify for this amazing opportunity,” Mondry said. “I could not have done it without their help and dedication.”

She said she is particularly thankful for James McDaniel, adjunct instructor of Biological Sciences, and Rachael Lancor, associate professor of Physics, for writing her letters of recommendation. Mondry is also appreciative for the help Adam Fell, assistant professor of English, gave her with writing essays for the application.
