By Santi Elbow
I started working with On The Edge News when I was a sophomore at Edgewood College in 2016 through a partnered paid internship with the Cutting Edge Program.
Over the course of the four years I have worked with OTE, I have covered various topics for different articles. I built connections with the people on campus I interviewed for every article. I learned various different styles to or writing.
Each of the five different editors I have worked with taught me different skills to use in my writing. When I first started, I worked with Hunter Salmon and wrote my first article and the new and improved handicap symbols in the Edgewood College parking lots. When he left, Alex Thomas was editor. Then I worked with Shanzeh Ahmad before working with the current editor Alyssa Allemand. Each of these editors taught me different ways to improve my journalism. It was nice to see the transformation of OTE.
My most notable articles have been about the handicap symbols, the weather delaying the softball team’s 2019 spring break, personal counseling services, the theatre department’s ‘columbinus’ production, and an update on enrollment.
During my time at OTE, I have made wonderful connections with mentors and made lifelong friends while also having the opportunity to develop job skills. I have become a better observer and more critical thinker through learning how to conduct interviews and write as a journalist.
I am extremely thankful for the help of past and current mentors and OTE staff members. I want to thank Alyssa and the current OTE staff for the help they’ve given me and for making my last year at Edgewood a great one. Working for OTE has been a very memorable, fun and enriching experience and it gives me many things to look forward to as I leave Edgewood College.
