Faculty to vote on design minor; art certificate added to catalog

By Alyssa Allemand

Faculty Association will vote on a design minor on March 30.

Faculty presented the proposal at the Feb. 24 Faculty Association meeting.

The minor is a collaboration across the theatre, art, physics and computer science departments, said Shad Wenzlaff, senior lecturer of Art History. Wenzlaff is responsible for “launching and maintaining” the minor, according to the proposal.

Other faculty on the proposal team include Bob Tarrell, chair of the Art department, and Christopher Dunham, assistant professor of Theatre. Rachel Lancor, professor of Physics, also helped create the design minor.

Wenzlaff described the 20-credit design minor as a “supplement for creative thinking.”

Certificate of Art

Art Department faculty have also created a Certificate of Art “in response to non-art major student demand,” said Lecturer of Art History Sarah Stolte.

This certificate has been approved by the Undergraduate Curriculum Committee and the Dean’s Council, said Tarrell. It will be in the 2020-21 college catalog, which is scheduled to be published on May 4.

“We think students will find having a more formal certificate will give them validation for any work that they do in the Art Department without actually getting or wanting to have an art major,” Stolte said.

Stolte said the certificate will also boost students’ CVs and resumes by showing they have knowledge outside of their declared area of study.

Both the Certificate of Art and the design minor are interdisciplinary programs, said Tarrell, and will “hopefully [fill] our rooms.” Neither require any new classes, faculty or facilities.
