A father who killed his 19-year-old daughter by running her over twice has died in prison. Nigel Malt, 47, was serving a life sentence for the murder of Lauren Malt when he was found dead at HMP Gartree in Leicestershire on April 29, 2025.
The cause of his death has not been disclosed, and an investigation by the Prisons and Probation Ombudsman is underway, which is standard procedure when an inmate dies in custody.
The tragic incident occurred in January 2022 outside the family home in West Winch, Norfolk. Lauren was attempting to protect her boyfriend from an attack by her father, who was armed with a crowbar.
In a fit of rage, Malt used his black Mercedes to reverse over Lauren, then drove forward over her again as she screamed in agony.
Witnesses at the scene were horrified, with one reportedly shouting, “You’ve killed her!” Instead of calling emergency services, Malt placed his injured daughter in the passenger seat and drove to the shop where his estranged wife worked, informing her that their daughter was dead.
Lauren was later pronounced dead at the hospital, having suffered severe injuries including a broken back, ribs, and traumatic damage to her chest and abdomen.
At the time of the murder, Malt was on bail for assaulting his wife and had breached his bail conditions by contacting his family. On the day of the incident, he made multiple phone calls to his daughter’s home before arriving there and confronting her and her boyfriend.
During his trial at Norwich Crown Court in July 2022, Malt denied murder, claiming the incident was accidental.
However, the jury found him guilty, and he was sentenced to life imprisonment with a minimum term of 18 years, later increased to 22 years by the Court of Appeal due to the severity of the crime and his history of domestic abuse.
Judge Anthony Bate, during sentencing, described Malt’s actions as using his car as a “lethal weapon in an alcohol-fuelled rage in a residential street,” emphasizing that Lauren should have been safe in her father’s company.
Malt’s death brings a grim end to a case that shocked the community and highlighted the devastating consequences of domestic violence and uncontrolled anger.
The ongoing investigation into his death aims to provide clarity on the circumstances surrounding it.
