Homestead Woman Charged with Attempted Murder After Stabbing Daughter-in-Law in Front of Grandchildren

HOMESTEAD, Fla. – A 57-year-old woman was arrested Wednesday after allegedly stabbing her daughter-in-law during a violent altercation witnessed by her grandchildren, Homestead police said.

The attack happened around 3:42 p.m. at a home on the 700 block of Southwest Fourth Avenue.

According to police, when officers arrived and knocked on the front door, Celestine Ward answered. The responding officer immediately saw the victim on the living room floor, bleeding heavily and leaning against a cot bed. The woman was airlifted in critical condition to Jackson South Medical Center.

Investigators said the victim’s daughter told officers that her parents had been arguing before her father left the home. Afterward, an argument broke out between her mother and grandmother.

“Grandma started to kill mommy with the knife. The knife is in the room under the bed,” the child reportedly told officers.

The victim’s children were later placed in the custody of the Florida Department of Children and Families.

At the hospital, the victim told detectives that she and Ward had been drinking earlier that day at Chili’s Grill & Bar. When they returned home, an argument began—though the victim said she couldn’t recall what started it. She remembered Ward charging at her and said she was stabbed multiple times during a second attack with a knife.

Ward later gave a recorded statement, claiming the stabbing was in self-defense after the victim allegedly punched her in the face. However, police noted Ward had no visible injuries.

Ward was arrested on a charge of attempted murder. As of Thursday morning, she remained in custody at the Turner Guilford Knight Correctional Center, with her bond yet to be set.
