Despite COVID-19 related problems, students will still receive their guaranteed internship stipends through the Inclusive Internship Project.
Edgewood College understood the financial burdens that students are faced with and wanted students to find comfort in knowing their stipends still hold true even though many of the participating organizations have gone remote, cut hours, or ended completely, said Richelle Kasten, inclusive internship project coordinator.
Wisconsin Watch, a non-profit news organization in Madison that partners with Edgewood College, has restructured and is fully online due to COVID-19.
Although Alyssa Allemand, an Edgewood College student and intern for Wisconsin Watch, has had to adjust to completing projects remotely, she said she is still grateful to be there receiving her full stipend.
“I’m appreciative for the folks in the career center for giving students the opportunity to make up their stipend hours in other ways,” Allemand said. “I’m also thankful for the staff at my internship for still keeping me on.”
Some internship organizations are not adjustable and have had to end due to COVID-19, but students still have required assignments. Kasten has been working to get assignments ready for students.
“I have been conducting virtual site visits with all of my interns and their supervisors to talk about next steps–many of these students either already have alternative assignments to complete for their internship course,” Kasten said. “If not, we can provide an alternative/supplemental assignment through the Inclusive Internship Project.”
Students have until May 8 to finish alternative projects if needed for completion for their internship.
