Following the Sept. 24 announcement of Edgewood College President Andrew Manion’s “see something, say something” hotline, there has been an 83 percent decrease in active cases amongst the Eagle community.
Manion’s implementation of the hotline on campus coincided with the timeline of decreasing cases of COVID-19.
Of the 71 total reported cases of COVID-19 amongst Edgewood College students, faculty, and staff, 68 have recovered, and only five remain active.
“I recognize that sometimes we forget or let our guard down. So, to help us all work together, we are providing you with a tool requested by the leadership of the Student Senate,” said Manion.
Students are encouraged to use the hotline, accessible at 608-556-9836, to report COVID protocol violations on campus.
All reports to the hotline are addressed immediately by campus security.
Nearing a month without a spike in cases, many students are puzzled with whether to be optimistic about these statistics.
Rodrigo Valdivia, a first-year student of the Social Innovation and Sustainability Leadership program at Edgewood College, said he is pleased with the way the pandemic has been addressed by the administration of his new school.
Valdivia, however, said that the pandemic is far from over. “I think Manion has done a phenomenal job instilling a healthy respect for the precautions we need to take through effective communication to students and updates in managing such a fluid situation,” said Valdivia.
“We are not out of the woods, and we don’t even know how long the woods are,” added Valdivia, “but we must continue venturing through with our guard up, and he and the rest of the Edgewood staff have done an excellent job of guiding us through.”
Although there has been a decrease in cases within the Edgewood community, Wisconsin currently boasts the fourth-highest COVID-19 rate in the United States.
Dane County has been setting records for hospitalization, claiming a third of the state’s hospitalized patients.
Edgewood community members are encouraged to take this survey on the hotline.
