Edgewood College’s Latinx Student Union (LSU) will host its first general body meeting this Wednesday, Oct. 5, at Predolin Hall room 302, featuring Hispanic Heritage month and it has other events planned in the coming weeks.
LSU leaders say they are rebuilding the student executive board this year. With multiple seniors graduating from the previous year, many positions on the board have recently opened.
Diana Martinez, Secretary of LSU spoke on the purpose of LSU and how difficult it is for ethnic students to reach out and connect on a white majority campus.
“LSU exists to create a space for students with Latin and Hispanic identities to express their ideas,” said Martinez. “Especially in an environment such as Edgewood, a predominately white institution.”
Paolo Hernandez, Vice President of LSU talked about what makes LSU unique from other student organizations.
“Our student organization works on being inclusive and getting feedback from students,” said Hernandez. “Which is important now that Covid has made it more difficult to reach out to students and let them know that LSU exists.”
While the student executive board usually hosts events for LSU, currently OSII is hosting events in place of them. In October, LSU will start hosting events that student members have voted on.
