Here is what some candidates have to say:
For vice president: Shawn Padley, current sophomore
To the Students of Edgewood College:
My name is Shawn Devon Padley, and I hope to be the next Vice President of the Edgewood College Student Senate. But with so many candidates on the ballot, it can be hard to make a decision. That’s why I am writing this letter: to explain exactly why I believe I would be your best choice. I’ve outlined the four top reasons I think I deserve your vote:
Experience.
During my two terms as Vice President of Legislative Affairs on the Madison College Student Senate, I was able to work with my fellow senate members and the administration to pass a student referendum to move to a full-rental textbook program, saving the average student hundreds of dollars a semester on their textbooks. As VP-LA I was also able to re-work several areas of our bylaws making it easier to get and stay on Student Senate without compromising the integrity needed to represent the student body.
A History of Advocacy.
At Madison College, I was the co-sponsor on a Senate Resolution asking our college president to acknowledge October 12th as Indigenous People’s Day within the Madison College community. I was also a featured speaker at a fundraising event for the Rainbow Scholarship at Madison College, which is made available to LGBTQ+ students and active allies within our community. Between 2011-2013, I also worked in various capacities for United Council of UW Students, most notably as an intern working on the Gender Neutral Spaces Campaign, in which I worked with UW students across the state to help navigate the creation and designation of gender neutral housing and restrooms on the 26 (at the time) UW campuses.
Passion.
Anyone who knows me knows that I am HUGELY passionate in everything I do. I’m the sort of person who will throw myself into things 100% and work hard until the job is done to the best of my ability.
High Standards and the Best Assumptions.
I believe that the students at Edgewood College deserve a better college experience than what they’ve been given, and I truly believe that the administration wants to facilitate that experience. The unfortunate truth, though, is that communication between all parties isn’t always the best. I’ve spent years learning how to explain and negotiate the needs of student bodies and have a passionate desire to bring students, faculty and administration together to make Edgewood College the school I know it can be, and the collegiate experience the students deserve.
If you have any questions for me or my campaign, my EC email (spadley@edgewood.edu) is always open. I thank you for your vote and look forward to serving as your next Vice President!
All the best for the rest of your semester,
Shawn D. Padley
For outreach chair or diversity and inclusion chair: Asfiya Syeda, current junior
For student voice representative: Madison Smith, current junior
I wanted to give a voice to people who may not have a voice otherwise. I would also support them in any way I can and make their voices be heard and be a kindness to all. Being on student senate, I want to make Edgewood more inclusive for all and people who feel lonely. I would help them get involved on campus. I want to make Edgewood a better experience for all.
