A man in Merced County, California, was seriously injured after jumping off a bridge into the Merced River, not realizing the water was only waist-deep.
The incident occurred near the Cressy Bridge, where the man, reportedly jumping for fun, landed in shallow water and suffered a severe leg injury.
A fisherman spotted the injured man and alerted the authorities. Deputies from the Merced County Sheriff’s Office responded promptly, reaching the man using a small boat.
They applied a tourniquet to his injured leg and transported him across the river to awaiting paramedics. The man was then airlifted to a local hospital for further treatment.
Authorities emphasized the importance of assessing water depth before jumping, as such misjudgments can lead to serious injuries.
They also commended the quick response and teamwork of all involved in the rescue operation.
