Edgewood College has added to their security with the addition of Nightlock locking handles to buildings on campus.

The Nightlock devices create an alternative to barricading classroom doors with furniture in a lockdown situation.

Nightlock devices are installed on the base of doors, and according to their website, use the strength of the floor to withstand tremendous force. The devices installed near the floor level keep them out of reach of potential intruders.

“We got them to add another layer of security,” said Edgewood’s Director of Security Mike Metcalf.

The Nightlock system adds to the already existing procedure for an active shooter or other lockdown situation.

In Edgewood’s 2016 active shooter procedure, people were told to move to a room with a door that locks. The Nightlock system can be installed on any door, eliminating the need to change rooms in an active shooter situation.

Edgewood has the systems installed in classrooms and meeting rooms throughout the campus, according to Metcalf.

In addition to the Nightlock systems, Edgewood also uses written safety procedures and the Campus Shield Safety App that sends safety alerts directly to students, faculty, and staff whenever necessary.
