New Student Senate leaders look forward to making students feel heard

By Maria Chacin and Rachel Gomoll

Elections for the Student Senate Executive Board ended on April 17, at 11:00 p.m.

Results were sent a few minutes later to the Edgewood College community. The following students were chosen to assume leadership positions:

President: Alejandra Torres, Vice President: Shawn Padley, Clerk: Kate Martinez, Outreach Chair: Marie Treleven, Finance Chair: Fabiana Veguilla, Diversity and Inclusion Chair: Asfiya Batool Syeda.

Future plans

Torres, a junior at Edgewood, said that she feels  “beyond grateful to have been elected for president of the Student Senate.

“I see tremendous value in holding leadership positions, so to serve the student body in this way is such a dream,” she said.

She also emphasized her desire to make the importance of the Student Senate known through her time as president. “Student Senate’s main purpose is to give the students a platform to speak their truth, and who better to shine light on their very real experiences than other students,” she said. “Senate meetings have never been closed off to students, and I wish to see so many more faces at those meetings.”

Martinez said she is honored to work with the other students. She wants to ensure that students know their voices are being heard.

Martinez hopes to see growth at Edgewood in “creating a greater sense of community and inclusion.”

Treleven, Edgewood sophomore who started the petition for Edgewood to implement a pass/fail grading system, is “ecstatic” to serve as outreach chair.

“[I] feel honored that my peers put their trust in me,” she said. Treleven plans to keep students informed.

Syeda said she is thankful for everybody who supported her in these unprecedented times. She looks forward to “providing guidance and assistance that allows for cohesion and consistency of diversity initiatives.”

She said she will try her best to keep up with the needs of specific communities, as well as maintain outreach and assistance efforts. “I can’t do this job without the involvement and openness of you all,” Syeda said.

Student Voice Representatives

Elections for the Student Senate Voice Representatives ended at 11 p.m. on April 24. These students make up the rest of the Senate alongside the executive board.

The 2020-21 Student Senate Voice Representatives are Guen Lenerz, Xochil Castro, Morgan Koss, Justin Christiansen, Jade Proctor, Vivi Velaquez, Rebecca Grafton, Madison Smith and Hawi Bedaso.

Current Student Senate President Sydney Wilcox said in the email announcement, “I have full confidence in each of your abilities to represent the students of Edgewood College.”

WebEx meetings

Student Senate has moved all of its meetings online through Webex and is prepared to hold online sessions with each other and the Executive Board in the fall should quarantine last that long.

Wilcox said Student Senate will definitely continue to run if the fall semester is online. “They will hold meetings similar to how they’re being held now,” she said. “It will be up to the newly elected Senate on what kind of events they plan on doing, but I am sure they will continue to do Town Halls.”
