On The Edge wins national SPJ award

By OTE staff

On the Edge News is proud to accept both the Mark of Excellence Region 6 award as well as the national Mark of Excellence award from the Society of Professional Journalists for Best Breaking News Reporting.

OTE staff has been awarded the Mark of Excellence at a small school (containing less than 9,999 students) for our reporting on the Planned Parenthood protests in December 2019.

Region 6 consists of colleges in Wisconsin, North Dakota, South Dakota and Minnesota. OTE’s work was chosen for the national award, beating all 12 regions.

This series is now up for the SPJ Best in Show award, which will be announced in June.

The series includes articles about student response and protest regarding the removal of the Planned Parenthood link from Edgewood’s online list of resources, written by the OTE editorial team: Alyssa Allemand, editor; Robin Gee, media editor; Anna Hansen, assistant editor; and Jena Emmert, reporter.

On The Edge News’s series “Planned Parenthood controversy divides Catholic college” received the MOE award for Region 6 Breaking News Reporting at a small college.

On the Edge is now eligible for national recognition. The series will compete with the other regional winners for the national Mark of Excellence Best Breaking News Reporting award.

We are honored that our hard work has been recognized by the expert team at SPJ. We would like to thank all of our writers, media editors, photographers, and those who have contributed to articles. We would especially like to thank Pat Simms, our faculty advisor, for being our advocate and consultant.

Our search for truth begins with the students, faculty and staff that make up the Edgewood campus. We could not carry out our mission of providing objective and timely news without your constant support. Thank you for your readership and encouragement.

We make this campus, and we can know the truth about it.
