On The Edge earned a first-place award for in-depth reporting in the Wisconsin Newspaper Association’s collegiate Better Newspaper Contest, an annual competition that honors the state’s outstanding student journalists.

The college publication also won a third-place award for in-depth reporting.

“We are honored that our efforts as the student voice to report on things that affect Edgewood students have been recognized by the state’s leading news organization,” said Anna Hansen, editor of OTE

The first-place honor went to a May 2020 article about the college’s elimination of faculty positions with the headline “Edgewood eliminates seven faculty positions; Three tenured, four tenure-track”.

The judges’ comments noted OTE’s use of anonymous sources, saying that while the practice can be “tricky,“ the OTE reporter “made it work flawlessly. Story weaved together perfectly with quotes and research. Job well done.”

The third-place award detailed action in June 2020 by the faculty’s Academic Rank Committee, which criticized the administration’s criteria for laying off tenured faculty. The article’s headline was: “Academic Rank Committee echoes AAUP’s recommendations”.

“Good use of sourced material,” said the judges in a comment. “This reporter made sure all aspects of this story were covered.”
