College President Andrew Manion has begun efforts to promote inclusion and anti-racism at Edgewood with the formation of a diversity task force and the establishment of the new executive position of vice president for mission, values, and inclusion.
According to Manion, the search for the Vice President position will be nationwide and chaired by Manion himself.
“This position will oversee our institutional efforts that express our Dominican Catholic mission and values, and our (equally Dominican) commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion,” said Manion in a June 19 email.
“This position sends a message internally and externally that Edgewood College remains strongly committed to our Sinsinawa Dominican identity and heritage, even though the sisters are no longer working among us on a daily basis.”
In the same email, Manion announced the formation of a president’s task force to eradicate racism, intended to prepare the way for the new vice president.
The task force, which will begin its work this summer, will include members of the Edgewood community as well as the wider Madison community.
The committee will be co-chaired by Phyllis Esposito, director of the Center for Multicultural Education, and Donna Vukelich-Selva, associate professor of education.
Manion told OTE that “with this being the first time that we have no Dominican sisters on campus, we have to be very intentional about keeping our mission at the center of everything we do.”
