Presidential search committee selects search firm, expands members

By Alyssa Allemand

The Edgewood College Presidential Search Committee – which consists of board of trustees members Mary Schmoeger (chair of the committee), Jeff Bartell, Mark Lowry, Tracy Schwitzer and Becky Splitt – has hired Storbeck/Pimental & Associates as the search firm that will aid in selecting the next college president.

“Mary is actively calendarizing a plan with Storbeck/Pimental to include campus-wide feedback in November and commence the recruitment process by the end of November,” said Lucy Keane, chair of the board of trustees, in an email to board members.

The search committee has also expanded to include representatives from faculty, students, staff and one Dominican Sister, Sister Kathleen Phelan, O.P.

Faculty on the committee are Associate Professor of Philosophy John Fields and Associate Professor of Biological Sciences Jake Griffin.

Director of Student Inclusion and Involvement Shaunda Brown-Rivera and Assistant VP for Enrollment Management Kari Gribble are the staff representatives.

Undergraduate students chosen for the search committee are Alex Okelue, sophomore, and Sydney Wilcox, senior. Aneidys Reyes is the graduate student representative.

Originally, there were to be only two students on the committee. Applications were sent out to Edgewood students through Student Senate. Over 12 applications were received from students at all levels — undergraduate, graduate, and Ph.D., — according to Wilcox, who is president of Student Senate.

“After reviewing the applications, we were equally impressed with both an under grad and grad’s submission,” Wilcox said. “From there, Senate decided to reach out to Sister Mary Ellen and Mary (Schmoeger) … in regard to getting an extra representative.” The proposal for a third representative was approved by both Schmoeger and the board of trustees.

Interim President Sister Mary Ellen Gevelinger, O.P., said “kudos to students” for their engagement in the search for a new president of Edgewood College.

The first meeting with all members was on Oct. 28. Keane said in her email that the new members and the charge for the search committee will be presented to the executive committee for official approval on Nov. 4.
