SJPD to Hold DUI Checkpoint on May 16, 2025

The San José Police Department will conduct a DUI checkpoint on Friday, May 16, 2025, from 9:00 p.m. to 3:00 a.m. The exact location will not be disclosed in advance.

Officials choose checkpoint sites based on data that highlights areas with a high number of impaired driving incidents. The main goal is to boost public safety by removing impaired drivers from the road.

“Impaired drivers put others on the road at significant risk,” said Lieutenant Nqui Scherry #3822. “Any prevention measures that reduce the number of impaired drivers on our roads significantly improves traffic safety.”

Police emphasize that impairment isn’t just caused by alcohol. Prescription medications and over-the-counter drugs can also impact driving ability. Even though marijuana is legal for medicinal and recreational use in California, driving under its influence remains illegal.

A first-time DUI charge can result in about $13,500 in fines and penalties, along with a suspended license.

This checkpoint is funded by a grant from the California Office of Traffic Safety, provided through the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.
