SNOHOMISH COUNTY, Wash. — This summer, Snohomish County Public Works plans to resurface approximately 76 miles of roads as part of its annual maintenance program aimed at preserving over 1,600 miles of county roadways.
Why Road Maintenance Matters
Seasonal weather conditions and heavy traffic take a toll on road infrastructure. That’s why the county proactively manages a yearly resurfacing schedule to ensure safer, longer-lasting roads.
“Being proactive in maintenance and preservation of county roads saves tax dollars by reducing the chances of more expensive repairs,”
— Doug McCormick, Snohomish County Engineer and Public Works Deputy Director
What’s Scheduled for 2025?
- Asphalt paving: ~7 miles of roadway
- Chip sealing: ~69 miles of roadway
Both programs help extend the life of county roads and reduce future repair costs.
Paving Program
The paving season runs from May through September, focusing on milling and repairing damaged pavement before applying a fresh layer of asphalt. Paved roads typically last 15 to 30 years, depending on usage and weather.
Major Project Impacting Drivers:
- 140th St NW/NE (63rd Dr NW to 3rd Ave NE in Marysville)
- Work begins late June
- Expect single-lane closures throughout summer
- Drivers are advised to use alternate routes
Chip Seal Program
- Pre-leveling work began in April
- Chip sealing starts in July, wrapping up by September
This cost-effective method adds 7–10 years of life to the pavement and costs about one-third of asphalt overlays.
To help seal the road properly:
- A temporary speed limit of 20 mph will be in place for a week after chip placement
- Crews will return within a week to sweep loose chips, adjust utilities, and repaint pavement markings
Note: All work depends on weather and may be rescheduled.
