Student Senate has set of goals for 2019-2020 school year

Edgewood College’s Student Senate has a set of goals for the 2019-2020 academic year. Student Senate President Sydney Wilcox said this is a group that represents “the student body and what kind of needs or wants the students want Student Senate to advocate for them.”

One of Student Senate’s goals is to continue spreading awareness of the Senate through campus Town Halls. The next Town Hall will be on Oct. 10 from 5:30-7 p.m. in the Washburn Heritage Room. Edgewood President Sister Mary Ellen Gevelinger, O.P., will be in attendance.

Wilcox said in an email to students of the college, “This event will serve as an opportunity for students to be introduced to Sister Mary Hellen, ask questions about goals and priorities for the year, and voice thoughts and opinions of future presidential candidates.”

In an interview, Wilcox said, “It is important in ensuring that Sister Mary Hellen feels comfortable in her role and that she is welcomed by the students.”

Student Senate also wishes to fill their open positions: three general at-large representatives, a diversity and inclusion at-large representative, a programming at-large representative, a student organization at-large representative, and representatives for the sophomore and junior classes.

The email from Wilcox to students includes a general application for any of these positions. Students are directed to turn in their forms to Vice President Jordan Smith.

One of the long-term goals for Student Senate is to add an international student at-large representative. Other underrepresented students that Student Senate wants to support are graduate and returning adult students. “Often these students voices are not heard, and they do need to be heard on campus,” Wilcox said.
