AURORA, Colo. — A 16-year-old male suspect remains at large after escaping police custody Sunday morning, triggering a shelter-in-place order for a nearby Aurora neighborhood.
Authorities say the teen broke free while officers were escorting him from the Aurora Detention Center on E. Alameda Parkway to a patrol car shortly before noon. He fled into the neighborhood directly north of the facility.
Police immediately issued a shelter-in-place order for residents in the area as officers set up a perimeter and called in additional resources to assist in the search.
According to Aurora Police Agent Matthew Longshore, the teen was initially approached by officers around 10 a.m. in connection with a stolen vehicle. He has multiple outstanding warrants related to motor vehicle theft and eluding law enforcement.
The suspect is described as a Hispanic male with long hair shaved on the sides, numerous neck tattoos, and pierced ears.
Residents are urged to remain alert and call 911 if they spot him.
