The future of the Knowles-Nelson Stewardship program, a conversation with Mike Carlson

Feb. 26, 2021

For over thirty years, the Knowles-Nelson Stewardship Program has been protecting public land in Wisconsin, preserving the quality of our water, funding environmental nonprofits throughout the state, and maintaining state parks and outdoor recreation.

The program had been renewed every ten years with widespread support throughout Wisconsin across party lines and regions—until now. In 2019, Governor Tony Evers was only able to renew the program for two years with funding for the program set to expire this summer. This puts the program’s future vitality into question, with some arguing to decrease funding for various reasons.

Here to talk with me today about the program is Mike Carlson, Executive Director of Gathering Waters, an organization which helps support and protect land trusts in Wisconsin. To learn more, visit https://knowlesnelson.org
