A routine stop in North Carolina turned into a life-changing moment for an Alabama truck driver who hit the $120,000 Cash 5 jackpot.
Jonathan Hodge, a resident of Luverne, Alabama, was driving through the Tar Heel State on May 8 when he purchased a Quick Pick ticket using the North Carolina Education Lottery’s Online Play feature. His ticket ended up matching all five numbers drawn, earning him the top prize.
According to lottery officials, the odds of winning the Cash 5 jackpot by matching all five numbers are 1 in 962,598.
“I’ve always said, ‘When it’s my time, then it’s my time,’” Hodge said after his win.
He claimed his prize at the North Carolina Education Lottery headquarters in Raleigh and walked away with $86,109 after taxes. Hodge said he plans to use the money for a down payment on a house, adding, “Now I’ll have a nice little cushion.”
It’s unclear whether he’ll continue driving trucks, but for now, his unexpected win on the road is helping him steer toward a brighter financial future.
