SEATTLE, Wash. — Health authorities in Washington are alerting the public after a Canadian visitor, later diagnosed with measles, spent several days in the Seattle area while contagious.
According to Public Health – Seattle & King County, the individual traveled through Seattle-Tacoma International Airport and visited numerous public venues between April 30 and May 3 in Seattle, Bellevue, Renton, Everett, and Woodinville. Their vaccination status is currently unknown.
Measles Exposure May Have Occurred at These Sites
Health officials released a list of potential exposure locations, including:
- Seattle-Tacoma International Airport
- Bellevue Marketplace at Factoria Shopping Center
- Chateau Ste. Michelle Winery
- Home Depot in Redmond
- Dunn Lumber in Renton
- Genki Sushi in Renton
- Topgolf Renton Sports Bar & Restaurant
- Pho Mignon in Kirkland
- Kobo at HIGO Art Gallery
- Uwajimaya Seattle Asian Market
- Stoup Brewing
- Spicy Style of Sichuan
- A hotel and three fitness centers
The infected individual received a measles diagnosis after leaving the region. Officials stress that the virus can spread before a rash appears and may linger in the air for up to two hours after a contagious person has exited the space.
Rising Measles Cases Nationwide and Locally
While this case isn’t linked to prior local infections, it follows two earlier measles cases in 2025 involving non-residents. So far, five confirmed measles cases have been reported in Washington residents this year.
“With over 1,000 cases reported so far this year nationally, 2025 is on track to have the highest number of measles cases in the U.S. since the early 1990s,”
— Meagan Kay, Medical Epidemiologist, Public Health – Seattle & King County
Kay described the current situation as a “significant measles resurgence” both in the U.S. and globally.
What You Should Do If You May Have Been Exposed
Health officials are urging anyone who visited these public spaces during the specified dates to:
- Check their measles vaccination status
- Watch for symptoms like fever or an unexplained rash
- Contact a healthcare provider immediately if symptoms appear
Getting vaccinated remains the most effective way to protect against the highly contagious virus.
