“We have imperative work to do:” Student Senate denounces anti-Blackness

August 29, 2020

The August 23 police shooting of Jacob Blake in Kenosha, WI has reinvigorated protests across the country decrying police brutality and anti-Blackness. Below is a statement from Edgewood’s Student Senate in support of the Black Lives Matter movement.

To the students of Edgewood College,

Our country has been seeing months of protests, sparked by the killing of George Floyd, against police brutality and for racial justice. In our own community, there have been countless attacks against Black people; before and during this summer. Student Senate wants to bring attention to Jacob Blake, 29, an unarmed Black man, was shot seven times by police (in front of his children) in Kenosha, Wisconsin, on Sunday. As of now, Blake is battling for his life in a Milwaukee hospital.

Student Senate denounces ALL acts of hate, racism, discrimination, and inequality in the community and on our campus. If one student is impacted, we all are impacted. It has been said countless time, it is all of our responsibility to be aware of our biases, cultural beliefs, and values. It is also our responsibility to educate ourselves of HOW to be better, HOW to show-up for Black people (without taking up space), and HOW to challenge problematic assumptions and viewpoints – both our own and those of family/friends.

We have imperative work to do.

To the Black students at Edgewood college.. be proud of everything that makes you exactly who you are.. your life, your dreams and YOU MATTER.

As your Student Senate, it’s out responsibility to address the concerns that you have. Let your voice be heard against the acts of injustice. Reach out to us. Join us.
