In both the mayoral primaries and the general election, students from both Edgewood College and UW-Madison are eligible to vote if they live in the city of Madison.
In order to vote, all students must register before or on the day of the election. If a student does not live in the city of Madison, however, they are not eligible to vote in this election. Only residents of the city of Madison are eligible to vote in this election.
At Edgewood College, students will be able to vote in either Predolin Hall or Wingra Commons.
Students can register to vote year-round and can do so through the mail, over the Internet, at the city clerk’s office, at a Madison Public Library, or at the polls on the day of the election.
It is not uncommon for voters to register the day of the election. According to the Wisconsin Elections Commission, in the 2016 Wisconsin governor’s election, over 12 percent of voters registered to vote the day of the election.
In order to register, a student will need proof of address as well as a valid form of ID.
Proof of address can come in the form of a government document, utility bill, or a bank statement. Eligible ID can come in the form of a valid Wisconsin driver’s license, passport, or military ID.
The public records for voter turnout statistics are available online at the Wisconsin Elections Commission website (Elections.wi.gov).
The site has data as current as the 2017 election year. The data for any elections last year or this year are currently unavailable to the public until the commission has sorted through the masses of data and uploaded it to its website.
Given the current timetable, the commission website won’t be expected to have data from this year’s elections for at least another year or two.
The Spring primary is Feb. 19, and the general election will be April 2. Early voting is available at a variety of different locations, including Edgewood College, Madison Public Libraries, the City Clerk’s Office, and select locations at Madison College.
