Edgewood cancels spring break trip as COVID-19 escalates

By Alyssa Allemand

In response to concerns about COVID-19, Edgewood College has cancelled the Bridging Borders class trip to Mexico this spring break, which is March 16-20.

The University of Wisconsin-Madison announced today that face-to-face instruction will be suspended from March 23 until at least April 10. The university is also urging students that live in the residence halls to move out and not return until April 10, if able.

As of now, Edgewood College is operating as normal.

In an email to the Edgewood campus community, Interim President Sister Mary Ellen Gevelinger said, “We are aware that UW-Madison has made the decision to move classes to online-only beginning March 23, 2020. The President’s Council is conferring to determine appropriate next steps for the health and safety of our entire community.”

Edgewood students, faculty and staff should watch their emails and the college website closely for any updated information.

On March 5, Gevelinger sent an email detailing ways to prevent catching COVID-19 and the flu. The email included instructions on how to thoroughly wash your hands, as well as the following tips:

  • Avoid touching your eyes, nose and mouth.
  • Stay hydrated and get plenty of rest.
  • Avoid close contact with people who are sick.
  • Stay home if you feel under the weather, and encourage others to do the same.
  • Cover your moth with a tissue when you cough or sneeze.
  • Clean and disinfect objects and surfaces that are frequently touched.
  • Get your flu vaccine.
