Student Senate has semester plans

The Edgewood College Student Senate’s plans for this semester include on-campus voting, bringing back doughnuts with the dean, and creating more accessible financial aid scholarships for students through Edgewood Central.

Sydney Wilcox, president of the student senate, said she is excited to bring back early voting to campus.

In previous elections there have been early voting stations set up in Wingra for students, staff and faculty to use during the day.

Not only will on-campus voting return, but Wilcox said she is eager to also have “events for students to attend to know what candidates are on the ballot, what are things we’re voting for… to make sure that students know and understand the importance of participating in elections.”

In addition to voting on campus, there is talk of reinstating doughnuts with the dean of students.

“We are in the early process of planning doughnuts with the dean,” said Wilcox. “This would be a stop in time for students to get doughnuts and speak to the dean of students, Dr. Heather Harbach.”

In the past, doughnuts with the dean has been an informal way for students to come in and chat with the dean—Wilcox said the event will hopefully be brought back this semester.

There was some tension between the student body and Edgewood leadership after last semester, and it made some students wonder if that line of communication was still open.

Last semester Interim President Mary Ellen Gevelinger angered students when she removed a link to Planned Parenthood from a list of off-campus resources.

However, Wilcox said there is still a positive line of communication between the student body and the interim president.

“I will for sure say that I have met with Sr. Mary Ellen since then and had conversations with her,” Wilcox said. “We talked on a personal level and made sure that our relationship was still there and was still positive . . . Our goal is for us to work more collaboratively and not necessarily against each other.”

Wilcox said Student Senate also wants to have more accessible financial aid scholarships available to students, though that project is still in the very early stages.
