During Black History month, the Office of Student Inclusion and Involvement (OSII) celebrates Black love, Black rights, and Black wealth through special events including a trip to the Dusable Museum of African American History.

On Feb. 19, OSII took 12 students to the Dusable Museum in Chicago, IL to celebrate Black art and culture.

Laterrica Moore, coordinator for Multicultural Initiative at Edgewood College, shared that the Black History Month events, such as the museum visit, have been planned “in the mindset of celebrating and showcasing Black excellence.”

“Students pay $20, which includes a ticket to the museum, transportation, and a meal at a nicer restaurant in downtown Chicago,” said Moore.

Moore shared her goals for the Black History Month events saying they revolved around  helping students more fully understand the Black community.

“I think a lot of times there are a lot of events where we tend to revert back into the past and we want to celebrate what the Black community is about,” Moore said.

“The main thing is there’s this misconception of what it means to be Black, what is ‘Black.’ I really want to create opportunities where that is celebrated and showcased.”

OSII began Black History Month Feb. 1 with the Know Your Rights event that Moore described as “a night of learning and empowered by understanding your rights and options when interacting with law enforcement.”

Following this event, Edgewood students celebrated Black love Feb. 14 with a Valentine’s Movie night featuring the film, The Photograph. Moore said the movie was a thoughtful choice for OSII.

“Black love is not just about a man and a woman. For Black love, it’s more about the community piece,” said Moore.

OSII will finish its series of Black History Month events on Feb. 28, with a Financial Awareness event.
