STEM Forward, a Wisconsin nonprofit organization advocating for educational programs emphasizing Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM), honored Professor Amy Schiebel of Edgewood College this fall with its Stemmy Award for significant work furthering STEM outreach and education in Wisconsin.
The award was announced in October at the SySTEMnow Conference in Milwaukee.
Schiebel, a professor in Natural Sciences who is now the Interim Dean of the School of Liberal Arts, Education, and Sciences, said the award recognizes that she and Edgewood are key stakeholders in the STEM ecosystem of Central and Southeastern Wisconsin.
Bernardo Traversari, current director for the college’s Office of Science Outreach (OSO), said Schiebel created OSO in 2008, “to provide expert-level, fully accessible, and research-based science education programming for historically underrepresented communities in STEM.”
Schiebel’s goal was, “to create a department on campus by which resources could be shared with others outside of the College and provide a means for faculty and students to pursue outreach opportunities in line with the College’s commitment to service,” he said.
Rachel Lancor, a former Edgewood College professor now a science teacher and Research Program Coordinator at Madison Country Day School, said she can’t think of anyone more deserving of the Stemmy Award than Schiebel.
“Dr. Schiebel is an amazing educator and has contributed greatly to the science education community in Wisconsin, ranging from outreach programs for parents to training the next generation of science teachers,” Lancor said.
STEM Forward, headquartered in Milwaukee, began as the Engineering Society of Milwaukee in 1905 and renamed itself in 2011 to reflect its broader focus.
