Edgewood College’s Writing Center continues this semester with its popular peer tutoring services for students. Recent reports show fast growth with student drop-ins growing to 909 in 2022-23, a 43 percent increase over the 2021-22 academic year.

The center, located in the Rennebohm Library on campus, offers events, such as the recent Planner Party at which students received organizers to help plan their semester. It will also hosts the annual study night called Pizza To Pass at the end of every semester.

The Writing Center began the semester with student training and the group meets monthly for ongoing trainings. It is open 40 hours a week for any kind of writing support students need at any point in the writing process.

Fall is usually busy at the center because there are more sections of ENG 110 College Writing than in other semesters, administrators say.

Doug Wandersee, academic success coordinator who supervises the center, said he expects increased participation in the future based on recent trends. He said many students need the writing center because they did not get adequate writing preparation in high school.

“The challenge will still be to be able to hire enough qualified staff who want to work there as well,” he said.
